Self Portrait
1988, charcoal, 20 x 16 inches
The pensive emotion of this
piece is intensified by my desire to
capture the expression solely through
shades of dark and light. I was hunched over a drawing bench (this was an exercise from my advanced drawing course in college) and looking in a little drug-store mirror. The expression reflects more than the uncomfortable posture I had to endure. I was harboring a lot of concern and confusion about the "future" during this senior year of college. I remember thinking quite clearly that I wouldn't be able to
be an artist and make a living. Now,
over a decade later, I realize I will
not be able to live and
not be an artist.
