Still Life
circa 1984, pastel, 16 x 24 inches
I recall that as a teenager I was always looking for new subjects to paint or draw. This was a time I was very focused on doing portraits in pastel, and I think this was a break from the usual subject matter. Years later I found this picture and became fond of the lemon background. It seems rather cheery against the formidable foreground of stoic, heavy bottles. This work forebodes future leanings toward a very Rubenesque style, with color defining form.
