Teddy

circa 1984, oil on canvas, 18 x 14 inches

This is one of my favorite paintings. I had recently started a portrait class and, needing some practice, asked my brother to sit for a portrait. The formality of the pose and lack of dimension reminds me of Colonial American portraiture. Yet, this painting captures a depth of expression in the eyes—that set against the extreme stiffness of the rest of the work—exaggerate into a display of that most famous literary expression. The eyes, most definitely in this portrait, are the windows to the soul.
