A Study of Van Gogh’s
Landscape with Rising Sun
1999, watercolor, 11 x 14 inches
This was my first attempt at redoing a work of a master. In this case, I was drawn to the intriguing colors of this landscape—that beautiful periwinkle against vibrant green. I was also interested in the intense, circular treatment of the sun. The perspective in Van Gogh’s work is also interesting, as the strokes become longer, wider and broader as they move closer to the viewer in the foreground. I was pleased to have someone immediately recognize this painting, although I had not intended it to be an exact reproduction of the original work.
